LED Specifications: Avoid Misrepresentations in LED Therapy Devices

Choosing the right LED therapy device is essential for delivering optimal results to your clients. However, many suppliers present specifications in ways that can be misleading. If you’ve encountered inflated claims or confusing figures, you’re not alone. Here’s how to cut through the noise and make informed decisions when considering an LED device for purchase.

1. Electrical Input vs Light Output: Know the Difference

A common misconception is that higher power consumption (wattage) equals better performance. This is like assuming a car that burns more fuel will travel further. But what really matters with LED is how efficiently that power is converted into usable light, which is what drives the therapeutic benefits.

For example, a 240-watt incandescent bulb and a 20-watt LED bulb can produce the same amount of light, despite their vastly different power consumption. The same principle applies to LED therapy devices—higher wattage doesn’t guarantee better results. Instead, focus on light output, measured in mW/cm², which directly impacts treatment efficacy.

So, while some LED devices may boast high power input, the Xen LED focuses on the actual light output, delivering a high therapeutic intensity without wasting energy. This means more efficient treatments, less wasted energy, and ultimately better results for your clients.

2. Diode Count: Quality and Efficiency Over Quantity

Many suppliers emphasise high diode counts, implying that more diodes automatically mean more power. However, the number of diodes alone doesn’t tell the whole story. It’s like saying that a car with 300 horsepower can reach 300 km/h, without acknowledging that the engine can’t handle or sustain that speed for long.

The Total Xen is different. While it has an impressive 7,040 high-powered 2W LEDs, its real strength lies in how it uses those diodes. With a combined output of 14,080 watts, the Total Xen delivers higher intensity and greater dosages in less time, making it significantly more powerful than many systems with larger diode counts but lower overall output.

For example, a known competitor in the space has more diodes (28,512) than the Total Xen. But at 0.1W per LED their combined output is only 2,851 Watts—much less efficient. Contact us if you would like us to do a direct apples-to-apples comparison of LED devices for you.

The Total Xen delivers much faster, more effective treatments. The higher intensity means clients receive their full dosage in a shorter amount of time, allowing you to provide faster, higher quality treatments without compromising on results. This is particularly important for busy clinics, where time is of the essence.

Due to its high intensity power output, the Total Xen requires an advanced design (as well as an aluminium casing) to ensure excellent heat management to prevent overheating while maintaining efficiency. These are key features that many systems with plastic or fibreglass casings lack, making Total Xen the more reliable and effective option.

Additionally, our engineers are mindful of the delicate balance needed in providing effective treatment outcomes while minimising any risk. That is why the Total Xen’s optical output of around 28 mW/cm² is calibrated to ensure maximum therapeutic effect without causing discomfort, even for clients with darker skin tones.

3. Multiple Wavelengths: Don’t be Misled by Combined Output Figures

Another misleading power claim used by marketers is combining the power of different wavelengths—red, blue, and infrared etc—into a single, impressive-sounding number. However, devices cannot run all wavelengths at full power simultaneously, therefore it does not reflect the device’s actual performance during any one session. (To use a car analogy again) it’s like saying a car can go 400 km/h because each wheel can travel 100 km/h. In practice, power drops as the device switches between wavelengths. Always check the output for each wavelength separately, not the combined figure.

The Xen LED focuses on medically optimised wavelengths that deliver consistent and individual outputs for each wavelength. Each wavelength is tailored to run at its optimal intensity for specific therapeutic effects, ensuring targeted and effective treatments. This precision allows practitioners to offer high-quality, result-driven treatments.

Why the Xen LED Range Stands Out

As an aesthetic professional, your choice of LED device directly impacts the results you deliver. Don’t be misled by inflated specs—focus on what truly matters: light output, diode quality, and wavelength precision.

At Aesthetic Bureau, we prioritise transparency and performance. Our Xen LED range, including the Xen LED, Total Xen, and Pearl Xen, features cutting-edge technology designed to provide powerful and consistent results.

While others in the industry emphasise input consumption, we focus on accurate, measurable light output that meets the highest medical standards for precision, giving clients reliable results. Our devices operate at higher intensities with efficiency, reducing treatment times without compromising on outcomes.

This balance of power and speed allows you to treat more clients while maintaining exceptional quality. All Xen devices are TGA-listed and ISO 13485:2016 certified, ensuring the highest standards of safety and reliability.
